Fugitive extradited from Singapore to Oakland after 20 years


A lady who was a fugitive from federal authorities for 20 years appeared in courtroom in Oakland for the primary time after being extradited from Singapore, U.S. prosecutors stated.

Voni Chen, now 57, of Taiwan and her father, Richard Chen, 87, had been initially indicted in 2000 on mail fraud costs relating to their manufacturing enterprise.

The pair submitted faux invoices to a credit score firm to be able to obtain greater than $5 million in mortgage funds, federal prosecutors stated.

Voni and Richard Chen each pleaded responsible to the fees in 2001 however failed to seem for his or her sentencing hearings in 2002.

Bench warrants had been issued for his or her arrests, and the pair had been fugitives for over 20 years till Singaporean officers alerted U.S. authorities that they had been in Singapore and arrested them.

“Following the Chens’ consent to their extradition to america, the Singapore Minister for Regulation ordered each to be extradited,” prosecutors stated.

Voni Chen was transported to america final week and made her first look in courtroom Friday. Richard Chen continues to be awaiting transportation.
